Designing for ‘Deep Think’ at JPL

JPL Deep Think

Design and Technology Researcher

Jeff Burke, of UCLA’s REMAP, and I were invited by UCLA’s CityLAB think tank to take part in a project exploring the various elements in the JPL work-space that can hinder productivity and collaboration. From the research, we designed a future, outdoor, and mobile meeting space that would foster collaboration and increase productivity. We deployed technologies in our designs that either currently exist or will be available in the near future, including: flexible e-ink, flexible photovoltaic film, opacity changing ‘privacy glass’, and touch OLED screens. Specific technologies were chosen and incorporated to create a space that can be powered from the solar cells, and will allow occupants to have ample collaborative screen space. More information can also be found on the CityLab website.
